Edward J. Zander President and Chief Operating Officer Sun Microsystems, Inc. 901 San Antonio Road Palo Alto, CA 94303
Dear Mr. Zander,
I am writing to you today to ask that you meet with members of Sun's user community regarding the recent Linux announcements. We are extremely concerned that Sun is moving in the wrong direction. As your loyal customers and stockholders, we feel compelled to try to explain to you why Sun is on the wrong path.
I have read your biography in Business Week and I understand that you are a diehard Brooklyn Dodgers fan. Like Dodgers fans after the move to Los Angeles, the Sun community is dismayed by Sun's new Linux strategy. While after close examination Dodgers fans can recognize that Walter O'Malley may have had sound business reasons for leaving, we cannot find any benefits for Sun to seemingly abandon its Solaris operating environment for Linux. Instead, we see a great number of risks which Sun may not have fully considered. I have enclosed a small gift, a 1957 Dodgers team card, to help illustrate to you our strong sentiments.
A group of six user representatives have already met with Anil Gadre and other managers from Sun's Software division. I implore you to invite this group back to discuss these and other issues with you.
Thank you.
