Dear Mr. Groenveld,
I am writing you to provide a response to yesterday's advertisment
in the San Jose Mercury in the form of an open letter to Scott.
We value the opinions of our customers and all the stakeholders in the
greater Sun community, be they in regard to our products, our policies,
or our corporate conduct, and we use that feedback to improve our
performance and make Sun a better company. While we can quibble over the
accuracy of some of the points you raise as fact in your letter, we have
considered and will continue to consider your views and those of the
rest of the community in our decision-making processes.
With specific regard to the matter surrounding Solaris 9 on x86, as you
are aware, we consult with a group of Solaris users, with whom we are
confiding a great deal of proprietary information, to represent the
greater community. These individuals engage with Sun on ways to meet the
concerns of the community while meeting Sun's business needs. While this
process may have not produced the results you wish, we believe it has
been very useful for Sun and the community to be able to debate the
issues in a forum where we can disclose sensitive information and not
worry about it getting into the hands of our competitors.
However, we must object in the strongest way to your personal attack on
Scott McNealy in the press. We strive to maintain a separation between
criticism of an idea and criticism of a person. Personalizing your
comments greatly reduces your credibility as a spokesman for the
community.
We encourage you to work with Sun and the community to make your
opinions heard, but we cannot condone or respond to a personal attack on
any employee of Sun Microsystems. As a result, Mr. McNealy will not
directly respond to your letter in any way.
Regards,
John Loiacono
