Kim Jones Vice President of Global Education and Research Sun Microsystems, Inc. 4150 Network Circle Santa Clara, CA 95054
Dear Ms. Jones,
I am writing today to request support for tax-exempt subscription purchases via the Sun Download Center.
This afternoon I received an e-mail message from Sun notifying me that my Sun EduSoft Software Subscription had expired. When I attempted to renew on-line, I was stymied by the inability to remove the sales tax from the final order. I am prohibited from making purchases which include sales tax using my university-issued purchasing card. Instead of quickly completing a simple web transaction to renew EduSoft for the coming year, I must fill-out a paper requisition form, gather necessary signatures, and hopefully, obtain a purchase order.
The EduSoft program is now over a year old. I find it incredibly useful (though I have some suggestions on how it might be improved) and recommend it to my colleagues at Penn State and other education and research institutions. I was very frustrated that I was unable to renew my software subscription on-line, especially given that Sun's other e-commerce site, SunStore, properly supports tax-exempt orders. I am not the only U.S. K-12 or higher education customer who has encountered this purchasing hurdle and it may be costing Sun revenue opportunities.
Please call me, or have your assistant call me, so that I can walk you through the on-line order process and you can better understand my exasperation. Sun has an amazing array of software, systems, and services to sell, but the on-line purchase experience does not reflect it.
Thank you.
